Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - Canadians CF Dwight Smith Jr. hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th inning that scored 1B Art Charles from third base to break a 1-1 tie and give Vancouver a third straight victory over the Yakima Bears on Tuesday night out at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Yakima grabbed their only run of the game in the bottom of the 1st inning when CF Danny Poma smacked a single up the middle off of Canadians starter LHP Kyle Anderson and later scored on a sacrifice fly from 1B Wagner Mateo that gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

Vancouver's first run would come largely in part to a defensive lapse from Yakima. Canadians RF Carlos Ramirez led the bottom of the 3rd inning off with a single off of starter LHP Daniel Watts and advanced over to third base when SS Jorge Flores dropped a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by 1B Wagner Mateo. Vancouver 3B Kellen Sweeney hit into a fielder's choice that scores Ramirez seconds later to even the game at 1-1.

Pitching took center stage until the bottom of the 9th inning when Yakima reliever RHP Enrique Burgos walked the bases loaded with 1B Art Charles, LF Matt Newman and C Dan Klein grabbing free passes before CF Dwight Smith Jr. hit a 2-2 fastball deep to center field that was caught by Bears CF Danny Poma but was far too deep to challenge Charles who coasted home from third base for the 2-1 walk off victory.
