Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (12-23) won game two against the Road Warriors (9-27) 7-2, rallying late to take their second straight win.

After a scoreless inning started the night, the Road Warriors were able to strike first in the top of the second. A single started the inning, before a strike out and caught stealing cleared the bases with two down in the inning. Chris Rivera then connected with a fastball that just cleared the Mini Monster in left field to open the scoring with a solo homerun.

After another scoreless inning in the third, the Road Warriors added another in the fourth on a solo homerun from Melvin Rodriguez. Raul Rivera was continued to shut down the Blue Crabs offense early, maintaining the two-run lead. The right-hander allowed just two hits through his first six innings, striking out five along the way.

Rivera headed back out for the start of the seventh inning, which is when everything turned for the Southern Maryland offense. Angelo Songco got things going with a leadoff double, his second extra-base hit of the night. Dave Sappelt followed that with a game-tying homerun, evening up the score at 2-2 and ending the night on the hill for the Road Warriors starter.

The first reliever out of the bullpen walked Devon Rodriguez, before a balk moved Rodriguez to scoring position and led to another pitching change. Jose Ortega came on and picked up a strikeout, before walking the second batter he faced. Jose Gonzalez followed with a single, scoring Rodriguez to take the lead for the first time on the night.

The offense didn't stop there, as a wild pitch allowed Angelys Nina to score and add another to the total. A walk to Johnny Bladel put two men on for Edwin Garcia, who singled to score Gonzalez. Frank Martinez added the fifth hit of the inning, scoring Bladel on a single to put the score at 6-2. The six-run inning was the highest total in a single inning for the Blue Crabs offense on the season.

Rodriguez added another run in the bottom of the eighth, coming across on the second wild pitch of the inning from the Road Warriors. Sam Runion then came on for the ninth, looking to secure back-to-back wins for the team. The reliever worked a 1-2-3 inning, shutting the door on the 7-2 win and confirming at least a win in the series for the team.

The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, June 6th for the series finale against the Road Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Wednesday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
