Newark Bears News Release

(Bridgewater, N.J)- The Somerset Patriots stunned the Newark Bears 5-4 on Friday night at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

The Bears struck first in the top of the first. James Cooper led off with a hit by pitch and then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Patriots catcher J.R. Hopf. After Kennard Jones was retired, Scott Spiezio drove in Cooper with an RBI single to put the Bears ahead 1-0.

Newark tacked on another run in the 4th inning with a solo homer by Daryle Ward, his eighth of the year, to extend the lead to 2-0. Bears starter Mike Loree set down the first 11 Patriots hitters in order before pinch-hitter Joe Burke singled with two outs in the fourth inning. Somerset finally broke through in the fifth inning. Noah Hall reached on a fielding error by Scott Spiezio to lead off the frame. After Loree retired the next two batters, Hopf plated Hall with an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by David Housel to tie the game at two.

The Bears pushed back in front in the top of the sixth. Jones led off the frame with his Atlantic League leading seventh triple of the season. Spiezio followed with an RBI double and three batters later, Victor Rodriguez drove in Spiezio with an RBI single to give Newark a 4-2 lead.

The Patriots responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Somerset loaded the bases with singles from Joe Burke and Michael Hernandez and a hit by pitch of Noah Hall. Jason Belcher came through with an RBI single and Elliot Ayala followed with an RBI fielder's choice and the game was again tied, this time at four apiece.

Greg Reinhard (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief, but the eighth was the deciding frame in the contest. With Reinhard on for his second inning of relief, former Bear Michael Hernandez hit a one out pitch over the left-center field wall to give Somerset its first lead of the game, 5-4.

The Bears put two runners on in the top of the 9th, but Jeff Kennard got Daryle Ward to groundout to end the game and in the process picked up his second save of the season. Brian Henderson (2-2) earned the win tossing one and one-third scoreless innings in relief. Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision. Loree scattered six hits and allowed four runs, two earned, over six innings. Jesse Darcy, the Somerset starter, allowed four runs, seven hits and struck out four over five and one-third innings.

The Bears and Patriots continue their series Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Park. Fans can tune into the action as David Greenwald provides the play-by-play. The Bears return to the "Den" on Friday, June 25 to take on the York Revolution.
