Newark Bears News Release

(Bridgewater, N.J.) - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 4-3 on Saturday night at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

The Bears struck first in the top of the first. With a man aboard, Carl Everett smashed his first dinger of the season out to right to give Newark a 2-0 lead. Matt Hagen pulled the Patriots within a run in the home first with a solo shot to leftfield off Paul Fagan.

Somerset evened the score in the fifth as Hagan reached on a two-out error. After a walk, Michael Hernandez, who plated the winning run on Friday night, brought in Hagen with a RBI single to left and the game was tied at 2.

Newark pushed back ahead for the second time in the visitor's eighth against reliever Jerry Dunn. Paddy Matera and Kennard Jones started the frame with back-to-back singles and Daryle Ward was intentionally walked to load the bases with just one out. After a pitching change, Everett picked up another RBI, scoring Matera from third to make it 3-2 Bears.

The Patriots responded in the bottom of the inning with the usual suspects. Tim Raines Jr. singled and stole second and came home on Hagen's RBI single to knot the score at three. Hagen, who went 2-for-4, moved himself around the bases by stealing second and moving to third on the catcher throwing error. Two batters later, Hernandez flied out to right and Hagen just slide around the tag of Pennino to put Somerset up 4-3. The Bears got the tying run to second in the ninth against closer Ryan Houston, but James Cooper lined into the game-ending four unassisted double play.

Reliever Brian Henderson (3-2) got the win tossing two-thirds of an inning. Fagan (3-6) suffered the loss, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs, two earned, with three walks over six and one-third innings. Houston notched his league-leading 15th save on the season.

Newark and Somerset conclude the series on Father's Day Sunday. Game time is set for 1:35 p.m. Fans can tune into the action as David Greenwald provides the play-by-play. The Bears return to the "Den" on Friday, June 25 to take on the York Revolution.
