 Fresno Grizzlies

Late Grizz Rally Stymied in 9th

August 21, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

The Fresno Grizzlies and Albuquerque Isotopes each had to outlast the rain Sunday evening, and the 'Topes barely outlasted the Grizz, hanging on for a 4-3 win after a ninth inning Fresno rally. An hour and a half weather delay interrupted the game in the sixth inning, before the Grizzlies were sent to their eighth loss in 10 games. The defeat dropped Fresno to 22-16 in one-run games this season (7-7 road).

Jon Kemmer opened the scoring with a two-out solo homer to right field in the top of the first, his 12thhome run in 33 games. Having hit safely in 28 of those games (and six in a row), Kemmer has 22 extra-base hits in that span, driving in better than a run per game the last month-plus. The dinger gave him 34 RBI in 33 games, and it was Kemmer's 17th homer of 2016 as his first Triple-A season winds down.

The Isotopes didn't wait long for a response; Stephen Cardullo ripped his 17th homer of the year as well, to right field with Raimel Tapia on base in the bottom of the first. Tapia, who had three separate run-scoring hits in Albuquerque's series-opening win on Saturday, continued to torment Fresno by setting the table for their top slugger Cardullo.

Leading 2-1 in the second, it was Rafeal Ynoa's turn to go deep to left, and his two-run shot made it 4-1 Isotopes, which would be final scoring play until the ninth inning.

Left-hander Evan Grills (0-1), making his Triple-A debut for Fresno, would settle down from there, tossing three scoreless innings. But his Grizz debut would be cut short by the weather, and not the 'Topes. The skies opened up for a one-hour, 34-minute rain delay with Fresno batting in top of the sixth, finishing Grills' night at five innings pitched, eight hits and four runs (three earned). He did not walk a batter, and struck out two.

Albuquerque starter Shane Carle (5-8) also went five and did not return after the rain, allowing just three hits and a walk, striking out eight to earn the win. The only run surrendered by Carle was on the Kemmer bomb.

The Grizzlies mounted a rally in the ninth, but fell a run short. After Jon Singleton (2-for-3, BB) and Derek Fisher (2-for-4) led off the inning with singles, Singleton scored from second on an Andrew Aplin one-out RBI liner to right, bringing the tying run to the plate. A batter later, Jack Mayfield lifted a sac-fly, scoring Fisher to make the score 4-3 with one out. Aplin would be stranded at first base to end the game.

With a 2-for-4 night, Colin Moran extended his current club-high hit streak to 11 games. That ties Teoscar Hernandez for the third-longest Fresno hit streak this season, trailing only Jon Kemmer (13) and Tyler White (15) for the top Grizz hit streaks in 2016. Moran is 15-for-48 during the streak (.313), with a home run, two doubles, five RBI, eight runs scored and five walks.

Game three of the four-game series will commence Monday evening, at 5:35 Pacific/6:35 Mountain. RHP Keegan Yuhl (0-2, 10.61) will start for Fresno, against LHP Kyle Freeland (4-2, 4.61) for Albuquerque.
