Lincoln, NE - The Lincoln Stars scored a power play goal with just 22 seconds left in regulation to down the Sioux Falls Stampede 2-1 Friday night at The Ice Box. The loss keeps the Stampede (6-4-2) winless in their last four games. Sam Stevens tallied the only goal of the game for the Herd while Jaxson Stauber stopped 19 of 21 shots in goal for the Herd who were flagged for a penalty with just 1:45 remaining in regulation and the game tied at one.

After a slow start to the game, things picked up at the midway point of the period when the Stampede grabbed the first goal of the game at 10:37. Lucas McGregor sent a perfect pass from the left circle into the high slot for Sam Stevens who one-timed a shot through the defense and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Herd would go on a four-minute power play later in the period, but were unable to convert and took the 1-0 lead into the locker room. Sioux Falls outshot Lincoln 13-6 in the period.

Both teams exchanged a couple of good scoring chances early in the second but the game remained 1-0 until the 12:46 mark when the Stars were able to break through for the first time on the night. Philippe Lapointe brought the puck down the right wing boards and sent a pass to the top off the left circle where Tristian Ashbrook one-timed the shot into the back of the net. That would be the only goal of the period as the Stampede outshot the Stars 9-5.

The third period was more even, but the still seemed to be slanted in the Stampede's favor. Neither team could score and it remained tied heading into the final two minutes of regulation. That's when the Matt Kessel got called for a questionable tripping call with just 1:45 remaining to put the Stars on the power play. The penalty kill started strong and just when it looked the Herd might escape and force overtime, the Stars scored. Declan Carlile snuck past the Stampede defense down the left wing wall and wristed a shot from the left circle right past the glove of Stauber with just 22 seconds remaining. The Herd had an offensive zone faceoff with 15 seconds remaining, but couldn't get the bounce they needed and fell by a score of 2-1.

The Stampede outshot Lincoln 12-10 in the period and 34-21 on the game, but went 0-for-3 on the power play while Lincoln went 1-for-4.

The Herd return to action on Saturday when they travel to Kearney, Nebraska to face the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 105.1-FM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com starting at 6:40 PM.
