
Late Goal Lifts Columbus over RiverKings

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A back and forth game went the way of the Columbus Cottonmouths (20-14-3) as they edged the Mississippi RiverKings (16-19-6) late in the third period 4-3 in Columbus.
The RiverKings jumped out to a lead midway through the first. Matt Whitehead collected his 17th goal of the season from Kyle Lundale on the power play to put the 'Kings up by one at the 9:12 mark of the first. Adam Feniak put the 'Kings up by two with his first professional goal that beat Andrew Loewen blocker side to send the 'Kings into the first intermission ahead 2-0.
Columbus battled back with two goals of their own in the second. Tom Maldonado picked up a rebound and beat David Wilson high to cut the 'Kings lead to one just 4:18 into the second. Jordan Braid tied the game at the 12:13 mark of the second with Levi Lind and Matt Gingera assisting to send the game into the third period tied 2-2.
In the third, the 'Kings struck first. Kevin Willer tallied his fifth goal of the season on a rebound in front of Loewen to put the visitors up just 4:03 into the final period of regulation.
But the Snakes battled back. Mark Thorburn crashed the net and redirected the puck to the back of the net to tie the game at three just two minutes after Willer's goal put the 'Kings ahead. And with 2:38 remaining, Derek Pallardy scooped up a rebound and put the puck into the open net to give Columbus the 4-3 win on home ice.
David Wilson (8-8-4) stopped 35 of 39 shots against in the loss. Andrew Loewen (14-4-0) turned away 34 of 37 shots to pick up the win.
The RiverKings return to the ice on Thursday night to take on the Mississippi Surge at 7:05 p.m. from the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center with all the action airing live on Sports 56, 87.7FM and the America One Sports Network.
