
Late Fjeldberg Goal Snaps Winless Streak for RGVFC with 3-2 Win over Atlanta United 2

EDINBURG, Texas - After a long winless streak, the Rio Grande Valley FC (9-9-7; 34 pts.) defeat Atlanta United 2 (7-12-8; 29 pts.) 3-2 on Saturday night at H-E-B Park.
The first goal of the match landed in the 3rd minute after Amadou Diop sent a long shot from the top of the box, sending the ball to the bottom right post 0-1. The Toros were quick to equalize in the 14th minute. Rodrigo Lopez had an attempt that hit the post, allowing Carter Manley to send a ball inside the box to Elvis Amoh. The attacking Amoh sent the ball to the back of the net to score his 9th goal with the Toros, 1-1.
Before heading into halftime, ATD 2 grasped the lead after Darwin Matheus was able to take on the Toros defensive line, forcing Tyler Deric to close in on Matheus sending the ball over Deric to score the lead, 1-2.
Arturo Diz Pe equalized with a well-placed header to the back of the net following a corner kick in the 49th minute, 2-2. In the 65th minute Jonas Fjeldberg tallied his first professional goal with the Toros which ultimately resulted in the difference maker in the match, earning a 3-2 home win.
The first half was full of offensive efforts for both RGV and Atlanta. The first dangerous opportunity for the Toros was in the 14th minute after Manley sent a cross inside the box, connecting with Emilio Ycaza. Ycaza was able to head the ball but was sent over the crossbar.
In the 33rd minute Andres Flores took on Atlanta's defense, giving a pass to Fjeldberg but was blocked. Two minutes later, Fjeldberg had another opportunity but missed to the left.
The second half continued to be a fight between both teams as they continue their road to playoffs. In the 71st minute Matheus had another threatening shot from outside the box, but Deric was able to save the shot in the top left corner.
As a team, the Toros finished with 20 total shots, eight on target. ATD 2 totaled 14 shots, five on target.
Flores was able to create four opportunities tonight while adding an assist. Fjeldberg took five shots, three on target while being able to have two key passes. Defensively, Diz Pe totaled four clearances, four interceptions, two tackles and a lone block. Erik Pimentel also totaled four clearances and a block. Deric totaled three saves tonight.
