Arkansas Travelers News Release

TULSA, OK - David Bergin homered (1) and drove in three runs to lead the Tulsa Drillers to an 8-5 series-opening victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Wednesday night at ONEOK Field. Tulsa built an 8-1 lead with Bergin's first Double-A homer providing the highlight in a four-run third inning. The Travs nearly came back and had the tying run at the plate when the game ended with their seventh straight loss.

Tulsa scored in each of the first five innings on 13 base hits and held the lead from wire-to-wire.

Probable starting pitcher Michael Roth was held out of the game at the last moment, and Michael Brady took the mound instead. He was victimized by a botched rundown between second base and third base in the opening inning. Second baseman Alex Yarbrough flipped over Kaleb Cowart's head allowing Delta Cleary, Jr. to score the opening run. Cleary had led off with a single and moved up on a groundout by Cristhian Adames.

A string of singles by Bergin, Jose Gonzalez and David Kandilas loaded the bases in the second inning for Cleary, and he responded with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Tulsa lead.

Brady (0-3) did not make it through the third inning surrendering four consecutive base hits including singles by Ryan Casteel and Trevor Story, then a two-run double from Jared Simon. Bergin popped the next pitch over the left field wall for a 6-0 Tulsa lead.

Tagged with the loss, Brady allowed six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings.

Mike Bianucci got the Travs on board with a solo home run (3) in the fourth inning, but the Drillers got that run back on an RBI bloop single by Ryan Casteel. Adames scored on that single after reaching base with a double. Bergin doubled to begin the fifth inning and scored when Cleary hit a single to center for an 8-1 Tulsa lead.

Tulsa lefty Carlos Hernandez exited with one out in the sixth inning after allowing a single to Matt Long. Josh Mueller gave up a single to Brian Hernandez and a two-out walk to Jett Bandy, who finished 3-for-4. With bases loaded, Mike Snyder hit a sharp grounder behind second base that was stabbed by Story allowing Long to score on a single. Three runners were left when Cowart grounded to shortstop.

With Nelson Gonzalez on the mound for Tulsa in the eighth inning, a walk to Long and a one-out fielding error by Story opened the door. Bandy's third single drove Long home, and Snyder followed with a single to load the bases. But the Travs momentum ceased when Cowart grounded into a double play keeping the Drillers up 8-3.

Kraig Sitton came in for the ninth inning and appeared to have the game in hand when Yarbrough grounded to third with two outs. However Adames allowed a routine roller to go under his glove for an error. A walk and infield single loaded the bases for Bianucci, who's blooper fell between Kandilas and Cleary in shallow center to cut the deficit to 8-5. Cole White came from the pen and got Bandy to line out to left field to send the Travs to their seventh straight loss.

Roth is now due to pitch for the Travs on Thursday night against Jon Gray. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
