SL1 Pensacola Blue Wahoos

Late Comeback Falls Short in 7-5 Loss to Mobile

April 9, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

Prior to today's game, the most runs the Pensacola Blue Wahoos allowed in an entire game was three runs to Mobile on Friday evening. Tonight, they allowed six runs in the fourth inning alone on their way to a 7-5 loss despite a late rally attempt.

Andro Cutura made a spot start for the Blue Wahoos at Hank Aaron Stadium on Monday against the BayBears in the finale of a five-game season-opening series on the road for Pensacola. The righty was strong early, putting up zeroes through the first three innings, allowing Pensacola to take a 2-0 lead on Mitchell Kranson's two-run homer to left in the second.

After Blue Wahoos starting pitchers posted a 0.45 ERA through the first four games in the series, the luck finally ran out on the mound for Pensacola in the fourth inning. Cutura walked a batter to lead off the frame before retiring two straight, but then watch the game unravel with two outs in the inning.

With two down, Brendan Sanger doubled to score a run and cut Pensacola's lead in half. The next batter reached on a fielding error, extending the inning. Given extra life, Mobile didn't look back.

With two batters on, the Blue Wahoos turned to Sam Clay out of the bullpen. The first batter he faced, Brandon Sandoval, singled to tie the game. The next two hitters walked and the following two each knocked singles.

When the inning finally came to an end, Mobile led 6-2.

The Wahoos took a run back in the fifth, using a lead-off double by Jordan Gore and a single by Luis Arraez to cut the lead to 6-3, but Mobile answered with a run in the seventh with a double and a single of their own off reliever Cody Stashak.

Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, the Blue Wahoos mounted a furious comeback, but fell just short. Ernie De La Trinidad drilled a one-out triple and Caleb Hamilton followed with a home run to make it 7-5. Gore then singled and Arraez walked to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. However, Mobile reliever Adam Hofacket escaped the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to end the game and give Pensacola their second loss of the season.

In his first start of the season, Cutura went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) while striking out five and was saddled with the loss. Zac Ryan earned the win for Mobile with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Offensively, Pensacola was out-hit 10-8. Jordan Gore went 3-5, the first three-hit game by a Blue Wahoos this season. Arraez reached base four times one a single and three walks.

Tonight's loss concludes Pensacola's five-game set in Mobile and they head back home with a 3-2 series win. After an off-day on Tuesday, they'll play their Home Opener at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Wednesday against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at 6:35 PM.
