Late Broncos rally falls short

Laredo Broncos News Release


Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos left 14 men on base against he San Angelo Colts as they lost by a score of 6-4 at Veterans Field on Monday night. The Broncos finish their 7 game home stand with a doubleheader against the Colts on Tuesday night due to threat of rain from Hurricane Dolly. There will be 7 inning games played starting at 6 pm. The Colts would get on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning. With 2 outs, John Anderson doubled. Then Jose Torres crushed a triple off the centerfield wall, scoring Anderson and giving San Angelo the 1-0 lead.

The Colts would extend their lead in the 5th inning. Charley Belew would lead off with a single and he would go to 3rd on a single by Tyrone Pednergrass. After an out, Jose Torres walked to load the bases. With Jason Landreth batting a passed ball by Luany Sanchez allowed all the runners to move up 90 feet and scoring on the play was Belew. Then with Andres Rodriguez batting, a wild pitch was thrown by Sean Donlin which allowed Pendergrass to score. That would make the score 3-0.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the lights went out at Veterans Field which prompted a 25 minute delay for the lights to come back on. The Broncos trailed 3-0 after 5 innings.

San Angelo would tack on another run in the 6th inning on a solo home run by Aaron Cone his 10th of the season. That would make the score 4-0.

Sean Donlin would leave the game for the Broncos after his 6 innings of work. He gave up 4 runs, 3 of which were earned on 7 hit. He walked 4 batters and struck out 7 and was in line for the loss. Rhett Barber came into the game to start the 7th inning.

The Colts would get another run in the 7th inning. Jose Torres led off with a walk, and then stole 2nd base. After an out, Torres would attempt to steal 3rd, and the throw by Luany Sanchez went into left field allowing Torres to score and making it a 5-0 lead.

The Broncos would finally get a run in their half of the 7th. With 1 out, Anthony Bennett and Arnoldo Ponce drew back to back walks against reliever Chris Weast. Then Luany Sanchez was safe at 1st on a fielder's choice which saw Ponce safe at 2nd and Bennett out at 3rd. Edgard Clemente would follow with a bloop single scoring Ponce, and making the score 5-1.

The Colts would get that run back in the 8th as Charley Belew led off with a walk and went to 2nd on a single by Tyrone Pendergrass. Then John Anderson hit into a fielder's choice with Pendergrass out at 2nd and Belew to 3rd. The next batter Jose Torres would hit a sacrifice fly scoring Belew and making the score 6-1.

Laredo would get closer in the bottom of the 8th. With 1 out, Ivan Reyes hit a solo home run, his 10th of the season. Johnny Lopez then drew a walk and went to 2nd on a single by Steven Wright. Anthony Bennett then hit a rbi single scoring Lopez and moving Wright to 3rd. The Colts would bring in Mitch Lively with the tying run coming to the plate, but Arnoldo Ponce struck out and Luany Sanchez flied out to end the threat. The Broncos would now trail 6-3.

David Wasylak would pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 9th as the Broncos trailed by 3 heading into their half of the 9th against Lively.

Edgard Clemente would lead off the inning with a solo home run, his 12th of the season. Dwayne White would then single to bring the tying run to the plate. White would go to 2nd on a passed ball, but Ben Tinius would strike out for out number 1. Ivan Reyes would follow with a strike out leaving it up to Johnny Lopez. Lopez however, would ground out to end the game as the Broncos fell 6-4.

The Broncos scored 4 runs on 13 hits and committed 2 errors, while the Colts scored 6 runs on 8 hits and committed 0 errors.

The Broncos now fall to 30-34 on the season and still have a 1 game lead for the last playoff spot as Edinburg lost to Alexandria as well.. The Broncos will be back in action on Tuesday when they play a doubleheader to finish the 3 game series against the San Angelo Colts at 6:00 at Veterans Field.
