West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Jeramy Laster hit a two-run home run in his first Midwest League at bat to put the Whitecaps in front, 3-0 in the second inning. But the two-run blast was only the beginning of his story in West Michigan's 7-0 shutout of South Bend.
Laster was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple in the fourth. He reached base on an infield single in the sixth, which meant he needed only a triple to hit for the cycle. However, Laster struck out swinging in both the eighth in the ninth innings.
Starter Sendy Vasquez and reliever Andrew Kown each pitched four shutout innings for the Whitecaps. Kown earned the victory and closer Orlando Perdomo pitched a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory.
Mark Haske went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to improve to 5-for-7 on the young season.
West Michigan scored four in the second inning and three more in the ninth and amassed 14 hits, which were spread throughout the game.
Cameron Maybin put the game away with a two-run double in the ninth.
The game began a half our later than originally scheduled as the Silver Hawks celebrated their 2005 Midwest League title and a new, local ownership group.
The three Whitecaps runs in the ninth inning came off South Bend relief pitcher Ryan Doherty. At 7-feet, 1-inch tall, the right hander is believed to be the tallest pitcher in professional baseball history.
