Las Vegas Gladiators Sign Daron Alcorn and Rick Cunningham

Las Vegas, NV, January 26, 2004 – The Las Vegas Gladiators announced today the signing of kicker Daron Alcorn, who set an Arena Football League record with 126 extra point attempts last season and the league leader with 109 made while playing for the San Jose SaberCats, and OL/DL Rick Cunningham, the eight-year NFL veteran who played for the Gladiators in 2003.

In other moves, the Gladiators released WR/DB Ryan Russell, WR/DB Mike Duncan, K Greg Krauss, OL/DL Ricky Leung-Wai and OL/DL Kenney Williamson.

Alcorn (6'3", 257), a two-time All-AFL pick with the Portland Forest Dragons, set a league record with 32 made field goals and led the AFL with 153 points scored during the 1999 campaign.

Alcorn joined the SaberCats with two games remaining in the 2001 season, the Vancouver, Wash., native has played in all but one game and was the club's career leader in kick scoring (282), extra point attempts (264) and made extra points (231). In 2003, Alcorn became the fourth kicker in league history to reach the 700-career point mark and ranks fourth all-time with 749.

Cunningham (6'6", 285 ,Texas A&M) played in all 16 games his rookie season in the Arena Football League in 2003 and totaled 11.5 tackles, blocked one kick and had one tackle for a loss of three yards.

Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League will begin its 18th season in February 2004, making it the second-longest running football league in U.S. history, trailing only the NFL. On the strength of its Mission Statement and Fans' Bill of Rights, the AFL is America's fastest growing sport. The Austin Wranglers joins the Philadelphia Soul and New Orleans VooDoo as the three expansion teams added for the 2004 season. At least two more teams will be added in each of the next two seasons. A network-TV sport, the AFL will celebrate its second season on NBC in 2004.
