
Las Vegas Gladiators Sign and Release Three

Las Vegas, NV, January 20, 2004 â The Las Vegas Gladiators announced today the signing of DS Halakilangi Muagututia, WR/DB Chameion Sutton and OL/DL William Mays.
To make room on the roster, the Gladiators released FB/LB Mathias Vavao, who spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Avengers, OL/DL Tim Croff, who was unable to pass a physical prior to the start of training camp and OL/DL Brian Lytle, who was signed in the off-season. Lytle spent the last two seasons with the San Jose SaberCats.
Muagutuia (5-11, 210, Texas-El Paso) was a member of the Gladiators practice squad in 2003. Prior to joining the Gladiators, Muagutuia played for the Chicago Rush as a member of their practice squad before being released.
Sutton (5-11, 190, UNLV) enters his first year in the Arena Football League with the Gladiators after spending two years at UNLV as a defensive back.
Mays (6-3, 280, Louisiana Tech) originally signed with the Gladiators on November 10, 2003, but was released prior to training camp. He spent the 2003 season in af2 with the Birmingham Steeldogs. The agile lineman was named to the All-af2 First Team. Mays set a franchise mark of eight sacks for a loss of 62 yards, placing him sixth in the league. He also recorded 19 total tackles, six tackles for a loss of 37 yards, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry. On offense he caught six passes for 21 yards and five touchdowns.
The Gladiators are now Armed & Dangerous to challenge the AFL Western Division with All-AFL quarterback Clint Dolezel and the most prolific receiving core in the Arena Football League, which includes newcomers Terrill Shaw, Marcus Nash and Maurice Bryant.
Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League will begin its 18th season in February 2004, making it the second-longest running football league in U.S. history, trailing only the NFL. On the strength of its Mission Statement and Fans' Bill of Rights, the AFL is America's fastest growing sport. The Austin Wranglers joins the Philadelphia Soul and New Orleans VooDoo as the three expansion teams added for the 2004 season. At least two more teams will be added in each of the next two seasons. A network-TV sport, the AFL will celebrate its second season on NBC in 2004.
