Dayton Gems News Release

Dayton, OH- The Dayton Gems professional hockey team is pleased to announce that forward Matthew Larke has signed to return for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.

Larke, a 24 year old native of Oxford, Michigan, rejoins the Gems after a successful first year of "AA" hockey during the 2010-2011 Central Hockey League regular season, posting 25 points in his 50 appearances in a Gems sweater. He was also part of the team's first playoff appearance, contributing an assist in postseason play against the Rapid City Rush.

Gems head coach Brian Gratz heralded Larke's efforts on the ice, noting "Matt is a player with a lot of potential. He has a lot of speed and is very difficult to knock off the puck in the corners and he was one of the more exciting guys to watch last season and I am looking forward to him playing an expanded role this season."

Prior to arriving in Dayton last season, Larke spent ten games with the Mississippi Surge of the Southern Professional Hockey League before being called up to the Gems on November 27, 2010.

Despite beginning his professional career in the southern United States, Larke is not a stranger to Ohio, playing seven games with the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets of the "tier 1" United States Hockey League, playing at Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus in late 2006.
