Laredo's Darryl Smith and Allen's Chris Whitley Win Weekly Awards

(Tempe, Arizona) - The Central Hockey League announced today that the recipients for the Oakley Central Hockey League Player and Goaltender of the Week for the period ending January 24, 2010 are forward Darryl Smith of the Laredo Bucks and goaltender Chris Whitley of the Allen Americans.
Smith helped the Bucks to four difficult points in their three games last week. Laredo traveled north to take on the two top teams in the Northern Conference and came away with a win in Rapid City and a win and a loss in Colorado. The Thorold, Ontario native scored six goals on a thrifty 12 shots in the Bucks three games accounting for nearly half of Laredo's 13 goals scored. Smith also contributed a pair of helpers for eight points on the week (6-2=8) and was a +4. The Bucks strong road trip has them sitting alone in the fourth spot in the Southern Conference playoff standings. On the season, Smith is tied for the league lead with 22 goals and has 37 points.
Whitley is the league's leader with 19 wins on the season and is coming off a 3-0 week that saw him allow just four goals in those wins. The rookie claims the award for the third time this season (Nov. 23, Jan. 4) becoming the first player to reach that plateau since Miguel Beaudry won the award four times during the 2007-08 season while a member of the Austin Ice Bats. Whitley's victories last week came versus Arizona, Missouri and Bossier-Shreveport where the Oshawa, Ontario native turned aside 83 of 87 shots (.954 save percentage). The Americans are 27-9-3 and are in second place in the Southern Conference.
In recognition of their achievements both Smith and Whitley will receive a special gift from Oakley.
