Lardner scores twice to lead Icehawks past Komets

FORT WAYNE, IN - Port Huron Icehawks left wing Tab Lardner scored twice on Friday to lead his team past the Fort Wayne Komets by a final score of 4-1 at Memorial Coliseum. The Icehawks also got a boost from goalie Adam Russo, who made 34 saves to earn the win.

The Icehawks skated to a 2-0 lead after the first twenty minutes, thanks to goals from Nick Lindberg and Lardner. Lindberg beat goalie Nick Boucher at 1:33 on assists from Brandon Naurato and Mickael Bedard. Lardner increased the Icehawks lead to 2-0 at 14:00 with his first goal of the night on assists from Naurato and Brandon Kaleniecki. Shots were tied 12-12 in the first period.

Fort Wayne cut the deficit to one with a Justin Chwedoruk goal at 16:45 in the second period. Shots favored the Komets 11-8 in the second.

The Komets outshot the Icehawks 12-4 in the final stanza, but couldn't beat Russo. The Icehawks, meanwhile, added two more goals to boost their lead. Kaleniecki scored just 50 seconds after the first puck drop to make it a 3-1 game. Kris Vernarsky and Jamie Lovell assisted on the play. Just over five minutes later, Lardner scored his second of the game and 17th of the season. The goal came on the power play and was assisted by Vernarsky.

The Komets outshot the Icehawks 35-24 overall. Komets goalie Nick Boucher played the first period for Fort Wayne and stopped 10 of 12 shots he faced, before being replaced by Tim Haun, who made 10 saves through two periods.

The second place Icehawks improve to 31-16-0-3 with 65 points in the International Hockey League standings and widen the gap on the third place Komets, who fall to 29-16-1-2 with 61 points.

Port Huron continues a three game road trip with a stop in Bloomington on Saturday and a game in Quad City on Sunday. The Icehawks return home on Tuesday to go head-to-head with the first place Muskegon Lumberjacks at 7 p.m.
