SOUTHAVEN --- Memphis RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin McClelland announced today that veteran defenseman Derek Landmesser will return for his sixth season with the team and his 11th pro season overall. Landmesser is the first player signed by the RiverKings for the 2006-2007 season.

"I am excited to be returning to the RiverKings for what is going to be the 15th anniversary of the franchise," Landmesser said. "This is also a big year for us on the ice after three disappointing seasons of not getting to the playoffs. We are determined to get back there and win a championship this season."

Landmesser is coming off a career season in 2005-2006 that saw him become the first defenseman to lead the RiverKings in overall scoring with 81 points. Those 81 points were also a career high, the most in the CHL among defensemen and 11th most among all skaters in the league. That point total was also the most by a CHL defenseman since Indianapolis' Bernie John had 85 in 2000-2001. His 64 assists were also a career high, third among all skaters and were the second most by a player in RiverKings history.

"Derek is an elite defenseman in this league and had a great season last year," McClelland said. "It always seems that the pool of defenseman is thin, so when you have a great one like Derek, you hold on to them."

Landmesser, a native of Thunder Bay, ONT, made his fourth straight CHL All-Star Game appearance and was named to the All-CHL Team for the second consecutive year last season. He was also called up to the AHL and played in three games with the Toronto Marlies in early February.

In his five seasons with Memphis, Landmesser has 54 goals, 253 assists and 307 points in 307 games. He occupies the number thee spot on the all-time franchise lists for assists, points and games played. In a pro career that has seen him also play for the Thunder Bay Thunder Cats (UHL), the Manitoba Moose (IHL), Rockford Icehogs (UHL), and Muskegon Fury (UHL), Landmesser has amassed 93 goals, 382 assists and 475 points in 612 career games.
