Mississippi RiverKings News Release

(Southaven, MS) - Mississippi RiverKings' team captain Derek Landmesser received a citation recently - a BIG citation - from the President of the United States of America.

Landmesser and 24 other community volunteers were honored for their civic contributions at an outdoor reception in the Courtyard on the Square in Hernando, hosted by Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.

"Receiving the invitation was a total surprise," Landmesser said. "Of course, they don't tell you who nominated you, but it was quite an honor to know that the RiverKings' work in the community and my role with the Jr. StreetKings roller hockey league has made a difference in someone's life."

The Jr. StreetKings is a recreational youth roller hockey league open to children from the tri-state area. The league plays at the Hernando Civic Center and falls under the umbrella of Hernando Youth Sports.

The covered rink constructed especially for the league was funded by grants from Maddox Foundation, who annually sponsors grants for the fields and other facilities at the Hernando Civic Center.

"Hundreds of children and families from all over the area are positively affected by that facility every year," said Maddox Foundation Director of Programs Mike Ward. "We are proud to support Derek, the Jr. StreetKings, and the other recreational leagues and sports there."

Mississippi U.S. Senator Roger Wicker distributed the awards to the recipients during the reception. Recipients, honorees and guests included people from a wide variety of corporate to volunteer roles.

"It was really neat to be included as an honoree among such a fantastic group of folks," Landmesser said. "It is not only an encouragement to keep up the good work, but also a reminder of how greatly the community needs people and companies who have such a heart for helping others."
