North Adams SteepleCats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After claim to the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) batting title on the last day of the 2013 regular season, North Adams second baseman and University of Rhode Island rising senior Joe Landi earned a spot on the All-NECBL First Team, with rising University of Hawaii junior and fellow SteepleCat Scott Squier earned a spot on the all-league second team, as announced by the NECBL Thursday.
Landi, the catalyst of the SteepleCats' offense all summer long, came into the final day of the regular season outside of the top-10 league leaders in batting average. But after going 6-for-8 in a doubleheader against Saratoga on the final night before the playoffs, Landi raised his average to a team- and league-best .348, and that - along with the rest of his impressive offensive resume - was enough to earn him a spot on the all-league first team.
In total, Landi wrapped up an impressive summer in the Berkshires with 48 hits in 138 at-bats. The Smithfield, R.I., native scored a team-best 27 runs, tallied eight doubles - tied for the team lead - and stole a staggering 22 bases in 24 attempts, ranking second in the NECBL in swiped bags on the summer. In league history, Landi's .348 average ranks fifth all-time, while his 48 hits is tied for fourth-most. Finally, his 22 stolen bases trail just former SteepleCat and URI teammate Jeff Roy's 24 from 2012.
On the mound, Squier rewrote SteepleCat records and dazzled throughout the summer. Finishing with a 4-5 record and 2.73 ERA, Squier pitched well beyond those numbers all season long and was easily one of the league's best from atop the rubber. The Hawaii southpaw struck out a league-best 70 compared to just 18 walks, setting a new franchise single-season record in the process. Squier also finished the summer with 69 innings pitched, 10 games started and three complete games, all single-season SteepleCat records.
North Adams finished the regular season 22-22 en route to qualifying for the NECBL Playoffs for the 11th time in the franchise's 12-year history.
