(BUFFALO, NY) â Former Buffalo Destroyers OS Lamont Cooper has filed his retirement papers with the Arena Football League. Cooper played seven seasons in the AFL with Iowa, Milwaukee and Oklahoma before finishing his career with Buffalo.
The 5'7", 170 lbs. Cooper set 25 Destroyers team records in 2002. Cooper was named Game MVP after a career high 415 all-purpose yards week three at Detroit. His 415 yards is second highest in AFL history. He caught 11 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns and returned 11 kickoffs for 202 yards and two touchdowns. He sat out week four vs. Detroit after suffering a bleeding ulcer. He returned to the lineup the next week vs. Toronto again gaining Game MVP after touching the ball three times in the first six minutes of the game racking up 106 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, one of which he returned his AFL record leading 24th kickoff back for a touchdown.
Cooper is the two-time AFL "Don't Blink" Player of the Year, taking home the award in both 2000 and 2001. The "Don't Blink" award is given to the player considered to be the most electrifying player in the league.
Cooper holds five AFL records including most combined kick returns for touchdowns (24), most kick returns for touchdowns in a season (7 with Milwaukee in 2000). His last three seasons in the league rank in the top 11 all-time in single season all-purpose yards. Coop hold's the #1 spot with 3,459 all-purpose yards in 2001 with Oklahoma, #10 with 2,746 in 2002 with Buffalo and #11 with 2,722 in 2000 with Milwaukee. He ranks seventh all-time with 13,384 all-purpose yards.
Buffalo kicks off its fifth season in the Arena Football League Saturday, February 1, 2003 as the Destroyers host the Grand Rapids Rampage at the HSBC Arena. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Season tickets are on sale now. Call 881-4444!
