Lakers Assign Coby Karl to D-Fenders

EL SEGUNDO, CA - The Los Angeles Lakers have assigned rookie guard Coby Karl to their NBA Development League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders. Karl is the 11th NBA player assigned to a D-League affiliate this season.

The D-Fenders also announced they have signed forward Stephane Lasme from the available player pool and waived forward Marcus White due to injury.

Karl was signed by the Lakers as a free agent on July 30, 2007. The rookie has appeared in two games for the Lakers. The 6-5, 216-pound guard was a three-time Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection at Boise State, where he ranks third on the Bronco's all-time scoring list with 1,698 points. In his senior season he averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists, and was named a First-Team All-WAC selection. Karl, son of Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, left Boise State as the all-time leader in games played (127) and three-pointers made (266).

Lasme was selected in the second round (46th overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He signed with the team on Aug. 21, 2007. The rookie appeared in two preseason games for the Warriors and averaged 4.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 19.5 minutes. He was waived by the Warriors on Nov. 17, 2007.

The free agent from the University of Massachusetts was the 2006-07 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. The 6-8, 215-pound forward was the third player in NCAA history to record four triple-doubles in the same season. Lasme, a native of Gabon, was one of only two players (Greg Oden) to rank in the top 25 in the nation in three major statistical categories as a senior and ranks 18th in NCAA history with 399 blocked shots. Prior to attending UMass, Lasme played three seasons for the Gabon National Team (2000-2003) while he was in high school.
