Lakeland Loggerheads News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. â World Hockey Association 2 (WHA2) President of Hockey Operations, Peter Young, today announced that the Lakeland Loggerheads have signed Chris Cerrella.
"This is an incredible opportunity for Chris." Young said. "He will not only get the chance to be the marquis player in Lakeland, but will also be able to prove his worth working with younger players. He feels he has something to prove in this league and we're happy to give him the chance." Young said.
The 5-foot-eleven, 200-pound forward spent parts of last season with the Orlando Seals, Cape Fear Fire Antz, and the Winston-Salem Parrots. He recorded more than a point per game on 30 goals and 32 assists in 59 games during the regular season.
"I am glad to see such a highly skilled player back in the State of Florida." WHA2 Co-founder and owner of the Orlando Seals David Waronker said.
"Chris is a game breaker and he can win a game for you. He can get you a key goal at anytime. Chris is a purely talented player. I believe if he gets in great shape, he'll become a leader in the locker room. There is no reason he could not be the first MVP of our new league. My family wishes him the best of luck, except against our Seals!"
"I am very excited to be a start of something new: a new league, and a new team." Cerrella said. "I was not planning on returning to hockey this year but when I was approached with this great opportunity I could not say no."
"I am excited about returning to Florida to help my teammates bring hockey back to Lakeland and help bring a championship to the city."
Cerrella and the rest of the Lakeland Loggerheads begin their season in late October at the Lakeland Center. They will face the WHA2's Jacksonville Barracudas, Macon Trax, Miami Manatees, Orlando Seals and a yet to be named Central Alabama team.
