Lake Monsters Snap 4-game Losing Streak with 7-4 Win over Auburn Friday

BURLINGTON, VT --- Vermont took advantage of 10 walks and five errors by the Auburn Doubledays, while three Lake Monster pitchers combined to strikeout a club-record 17 batters in a 7-4 New York-Penn League victory Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

After a Carlos Perez two-run homer in the top of the first inning gave Auburn a quick 2-0 lead, the Lake Monsters loaded the bases on three walks before a Wade Moore two-run single down the leftfield line on a check swing tied the game. The Doubledays retook the lead in the second on a Oliver Dominquez RBI single before Russell Moldenhauer blasted his sixth home run of the season to leadoff the third and tie the game 3-3.

Vermont then scored four runs on just one hit in the fourth inning for a 7-3 lead. Chad Mozingo had a one-out triple and then scored as Moldenhauer reached on a fielding error by third baseman Andy Fermin. After a walk to David Freitas loaded the bases, first baseman Yudelmis Hernandez made a diving stop of a Moore grounder at the bag for an out. Blake Kelso scored from third on the play, then Moldenhauer scored when Hernandez's throw home was wild.

The Lake Monsters got their fourth run of the inning as Jason Martinson advanced to second on a wild pitch and Freitas scored from third when catcher Perez's throw to second went into centerfield. The Doubledays got the final run of the game in the fifth on a one-out solo homer from Dominquez.

Vermont starter Colin Bates allowed four runs on four hits over five innings with two walks and six strikeouts for the win. Reliever Kevin Cahill struckout five of the six batters he faced in two innings before leaving after back-to-back walks in the eighth. Mark Herrera came on to nine batters in the final two innings without the ball going into play with two walks, a hit batter and six strikeouts for his first save.

The 17 strikeouts set a new Vermont record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, breaking the old record of 16 set at Lowell June 20, 2006 and at Hudson Valley September 6, 2007. It also tied the overall strikeout record of 17 set in a pair of extra-inning games vs. Oneonta August 26, 1996 and vs. Batavia July 19, 2002.

Moore finished the night 1-for-4 with three RBI, while Moldenhauer was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI as the Lake Monsters snapped a four-game losing streak. Daniel Webb (0-5) was charged with six runs (four earned) over 3 1/3 innings with six walks to take the loss for Auburn (18-30).

Vermont (26-21) moves back into first-place in the Stedler Division by 1/2 game over Connecticut (26-22), which lost 12-0 to Hudson Valley on Friday. The Lake Monsters open a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday beginning at 6:05 pm.
