BATAVIA, NY --- The Batavia Muckdogs snapped a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit to hand the Vermont Lake Monsters its third loss in the last four games with a 2-1 victory in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Dwyer Stadium.

Batavia got the run in the eighth inning as Justin Henley walked with one out, then stole second base and moved to third when catcher Sean Rooney's throw went into centerfield. Then on ball four to Domnit Bolivar, Devin Drag's pitch got past Rooney for a wild pitch and allowed Henley to score with the go ahead run.

Vermont got the first two batters on in the ninth inning as Bill Rhinehart led off with a single and Garrett Bass walked. Aaron Seuss, who entered the game with the third best batting average in the league at .348, tried to sacrifice the runners runners up a base but Rhinehart was forced out at third.

Rooney grounded out to second for the second out and then Jake Rogers struckout to end the game with the tying and go ahead runs in scoring position.

Starting pitchers Blake King of Batavia and Colton Willems for Vermont were sharp early. King allowed just one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts over five innings, while Willems gave up just one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in his five innings.

Batavia got its run off Willems in the third inning as Henley singled with one out, stole second and scored on a two-single up the middle from Daniel Decalso for the 1-0 lead..

Vermont tied the game in the sixth as Boomer Whiting led off the inning with a single, then stole second and third for his 22nd and 23rd steals of the season. Whiting scored on a groundball single to rightfield by Mark Gildea.

Gildea stole second for the Lake Monsters third steal of the inning, but then with one-out Gildea was caught trying to steal third base for the second out. Vermont did not threaten to score again until the ninth inning.

Ryan Buchter (0-2), who took over for Willems and pitched a solid sixth and seventh inning, was charged with the run in the eighth to take the loss. Buchter gave up one run (his first earned run on the road this season) on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Ryan Riddle (2-1) gave up two hits in two-plus scoreless innings of relief for the win, while Wayne Daman got the final three outs of the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season for Batavia (19-30).

Vermont (29-21), which outhit the Muckdogs 6-4, lost their second straight road game for the first time this season. The Lake Monsters also lost their previous road game at Aberdeen on Sunday and are now 13-12 this season on the road. Vermont plays at Batavia again on Saturday with Cole Kimball starting for the Lake Monsters in the 7:05 pm game.

NOTES: Vermont has not been shutout this season, but the Lake Monsters have scored just 1 or 2 runs 14 times now, going 3-11 in those games ... Vermont is 29-21 after 50 games, the 2/3 mark of the 75-game season ... The Lake Monsters were 14-11 over first 25 games and 15-10 in next 25.
