January 27, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- With their fifth season of play in the 18-year-old Arena Football League just around the corner, the Los Angeles Avengers will travel to Denver, Colo., today where they will conclude their 2004 training camp.

Under the watchful eye of head coach Ed Hodgkiss, the Avengers will hold a joint practice with the Colorado Crush on Wednesday (Jan. 28) and scrimmage against them on Thursday (Jan. 29) at the Pepsi Center.

The Crush, who are owned by football legend John Elway, went 2-14 last season in their inaugural campaign.

The Avengers, who were 11-5 last year and lost in the second-round of the playoffs, will kick off their season on Sunday, Feb. 8, versus the Arizona Rattlers at America West Arena in Phoenix.

After returning to Los Angeles on Thursday night, Hodgkiss and his staff will spend the weekend trimming the Avenger roster, which currently consists of 37 players, to the regular-season limit of 24.

Twenty newcomers are in training camp competing for roster spots with 17 returnees. Among the familiar faces are record-setting quarterback Tony Graziani, "All-Arena" wide receiver/linebacker Greg Hopkins and offensive specialist Chris Jackson, who earned the AFL's "Offensive Player of the Year" award last June after tying a single-season league record with 46 touchdown receptions in 2003.

Leading the way for the newcomers is "All-Arena" offensive/defensive lineman Al Lucas and veteran NFL lineman Jeremy Staat.

Eight Avenger games during the 2004 season will be televised on KNBC Channel 4, including the home opener on Sunday, Feb. 22, versus the San Jose SaberCats at STAPLES Center.

Nine-game season ticket packages are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com.
