Cobras Slide Into Final Week of Training Camp
January 27, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Carolina Cobras News Release
CHARLOTTE - Entering the final week of training camp, the Carolina Cobras biggest opponent has been the frigid, icy weather. With much of the city of Charlotte under inches of ice, Cobras' players and coaches braved the dangerous roads for afternoon practice sessions on Monday and Tuesday.
After completing a week that featured a 38-30 scrimmage victory over the Georgia Force and a highly-successful Fang Fest event that was attended by over 3,000 local football fans, the Cobras now begin to turn their attention to the opening of the AFL season.
Following is a complete breakdown of the Cobras' practice schedule during the final week of training camp.
Roster Moves
The Cobras' 37-man roster will change dramatically over the next week. All teams must reduce their active roster to 24 players by Monday, February 2. The AFL also allows each team to sign four players to the practice squad. The Cobras will carry a 24-man active list and four practice players for the remainder of the season.
Season Opener
The Cobras will jump-start their fifth season in the AFL on Sunday, February 8 against the Dallas Desperados at the American Airlines Center. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Following offseason realignment the Cobras join the Desperados in the Eastern Division. In 2003, Dallas secured a 10-6 record and the Central Division title in 2003, but recently learned they will be without standout quarterback Jim Kubiak for the season due to a neck injury.
Home Opener
The Cobras will kickoff their 2004 home campaign at the Charlotte Coliseum on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. Carolina will host the Arizona Rattlers, the runners-up of the 2002 and 2003 ArenaBowl. The Rattlers veteran squad is led by quarterback Sherdrick Bonner, wide receiver/linebacker Hunkie Cooper and 2003 AFL Ironman of the Year Randy Gatewood.
