L.A. Avengers kickoff CHP partnership with hospital visit

LOS ANGELES -- A year-round partnership between the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Avengers kicks off tomorrow (Dec. 11) with a "CHiPs for Kids" event at Orthopedic Hospital (2400 S. Flower Street).
Four Avenger players -- defensive specialist Damen Wheeler, wide receiver/defensive back Russell Shaw, and offensive/defensive linemen Ken Kocher and Kevin Watson -- will donate 250 "T.D." (official team mascot) plush dolls. "T.D." himself also will be in attendance along with "A-Team" dancers and front office staff.
The hospital visit starts at 10 a.m.
During the upcoming 2004 season, the partnership between the Avengers and CHP will focus on communicating the "Don't Hesitate to Designate" message. Avenger television and radio broadcasts will include CHP public service announcements. A similar message, featuring Avenger players, will be played on the video screens at STAPLES Center during home games.
Highlighting the partnership will be "California Highway Patrol Night" on April 16, when the Avengers take on the Detroit Fury at STAPLES Center. Prior to the contest, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., uniformed California Highway Patrol officers will distribute sets of Avenger trading cards at the turnstiles. Each set will feature 24 Avenger players, along with head coach Ed Hodgkiss and "T.D."
Additional trading card sets will be distributed through Avenger grassroots events, primarily to high school students.
"We couldn't be happier to join forces with the California Highway Patrol," Avenger president and chief operating officer Todd Merkow said. "As strong partners we will be able to communicate some extremely positive messages, help out in the community and enhance our game-night experience at STAPLES Center. We look forward to a long association with the CHP."
Avenger games will also feature a CHP booth to communicate safety messages, vehicles on display in Star Plaza and appearances by "CHiPper," the California Highway Patrol's official mascot.
