Dallas Desperados News Release

Three weeks ago, the Dallas Desperados became the first Arena Football League team to hold open tryouts in Mexico and saw first hand the growing popularity of American football in Mexico. The response to the tryouts and the talent of the players that participated excited the entire organization. In an effort to continue searching for talented football players in Mexico, Desperados Head Coach Joe Avezzano will attend the Aztec Bowl this Saturday in Cancun, Mexico.

"We have expressed an interest in investigating talent for the Dallas Desperados in Mexico," states Avezzano. "I was impressed with what I saw at our open tryouts in Monterrey, and I am going to further our search by attending the Aztec Bowl and evaluating more potential athletes we might like to add to our Desperados organization."

The Aztec Bowl is the traditional season-ending all-star game for Mexico's college football schedule. The game has been played 32 times since 1947, with the Mexico all-stars playing a mixture of NCAA and NAIA colleges, junior colleges, armed forces teams and international teams. In each of the last six Aztec Bowls, Mexico's all-stars have faced off against a group of United States NCAA Division III all-stars. The all-stars from America hold a 5-0 record in those games, winning 15-9 in 2002 in Torreon, 37-5 in 2001 in Saltillo, 27-26 in 2000 in Merida, 44-13 in 1999 in Mexico City, 40-13 in 1998 in Monterrey and 42-41 in 1997 in Toluca.

The Dallas Desperados – 2003 Central Division Champions – will begin preparations for their third indoor season in early January, 2004 when they open training camp in Dallas. They kick off the 2004 season on Feb. 8 by hosting the Carolina Cobras at the American Airlines Center. Season ticket packages are available by calling the Desperados ticket office at 972-785-4900 or by visiting the Desperados official website at www.dallasdesperados.com.
