Komets Slip Past Mallards
December 19, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, Ill. - The host Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, Saturday night fell to the Fort Wayne Komets 3-1 as Colin Chaulk scored twice and the Mallards saw a potential tying goal controversially disallowed late in the third period.
The Mallards were on the power play when Shane Lovdahl drove a loose puck into the net from the left wing circle to seemingly tie the game at two with 3:22 left in the third only for the goal to be disallowed because it was ruled that the puck had been hand passed to Lovdahl by a teammate.
Having survived that close call, the Komets would put the game away when Chaulk buried his second goal into the empty Mallards net with 18 seconds left on the clock.
The Komets had grabbed the lead by scoring twice in the second period to overturn a 1-0 deficit. Chaulk pounced on a rebound at 12:49 to even the score at one. With just over a minute left in the period Fort Wayne was on the power play when Leo Thomas broke the deadlock with a blast from the left wing circle.
It was the Mallards who were up a man when Juris Stals had rifled home the opening goal from the high slot at 6:09 of the first period.
The Mallards visit the Generals in Flint tomorrow afternoon before returning home to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks next Tuesday evening, December 22, at 7:05 p.m. Fans attending that game will be able to purchase 12-ounce drafts for just $2 at i wireless Center concession stands.
