January 7, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Shawn Szydlowski scored one goal and added two assists and Mike Cazzola piled up four assists as the host Fort Wayne Komets (20-9-3) broke open a close game with four unanswered third period goals on the way to a 5-1 victory over the Quad City Mallards (18-13-2) Satur day night.

Curtis Leonard's drive from the left wing circle snapped a 1-1 deadlock and kicked off the third period Komet onslaught at 5:27. Just under two minutes later- at the 7:24 mark of the third- Mike Embarch buried a Cazzola centering feed to stretch the gap to 3-1. A mere minute and 35 seconds after that, Taylor Crunk blasted home Fort Wayne's third goal in three minutes and thirty-two seconds from the right wing circle. Szydlowski capped off the evening for the Komets by one timing a power play goal past Mallard netminder Adam Vay (36 saves) with just 38 seconds remaining.

Fort Wayne's third period outburst broke open what had proven to be a tightly contested tussle over the first 40 minutes. The Komets were on the power play when Kyle Thomas walked into the Mallard goalmouth to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead at 3:11 of the first period. The Mallards' Sam Warning tied the score at one from close range just one minute and 33 seconds later.
