Edmonton Trappers News Release
Catcher Randy Knorr was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo home run as the Edmonton Trappers edged the Tacoma Rainiers 5-4 Friday night at TELUS Field. The win puts the Trappers into sole possession of second place in the North Division of the Pacific Coast League, one game ahead of the third place Rainiers. Edmonton's record in one-run games moves to 4-6 as they evened this series at one win a piece and moved their record on the homestand to 4-2. The Trappers trailed early on, but rallied for their ninth come-from-behind victory of the season. Edmonton's record at home improves to 11-7 with the victory. The club's starting pitchers are going through an amazing stretch that has seen them hold the opposition without a home run in 13 consecutive games. Edmonton's staff has allowed only 18 longballs this season, the lowest total in the PCL. The Trappers and Rainiers will continue this four-game series on Saturday night at TELUS Field. Edmonton Oilers forward Georges Laraque will be on hand to toss out the first pitch and sign autographs as the Trappers celebrate "Baseball Night In Canada."
Knorr opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field off Tacoma starter Craig Anderson (3-3). The Rainiers took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs off Edmonton starter Scott Downs (4-2). Mickey Lopez opened the frame with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Adrian Myers drew a walk to put runners at first and third and Chad Meyers followed with a double to plate Lopez with the first run of the game. Myers scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Barkett and Pat Borders capped the inning with a double that plated Meyers. The Rainiers tacked on another run in the fourth inning as Luis Figueroa singled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Ruben Castillo.
Knorr, Anthony Medrano and Luis Figueroa opened the bottom of the fourth inning with three consecutive singles, loading the bases for Scott Hodges, who reached on an infield single that plated Knorr with the Trappers second run. Terrmel Sledge drew a walk to force home Medrano with the third Edmonton run. Joe Vitiello then hit into a double play, but Figueroa scored the tying run on the play and Edwards Guzman followed with a single that plated Hodges with the go-ahead run. Downs settled down after the fourth inning and retired 10 of the last 11 batters that he faced before turning the ball over to closer Julio Manon in the eighth inning. Unfortunately for the Trappers Tacoma reliever J.J. Putz was just as effective, tossing three hitless innings in relief of Anderson. Manon got into trouble in the eighth, loading the bases on three walks, but he got Castillo to pop out to end that threat. Barkett and Borders each had bloop singles in the ninth, but Manon fanned Jacques Landry to finish off the game and earn his eighth save in the process.
