Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago Soul shut out the Silver Knights, 11-0, at the Sears Centre late Friday night, forcing the Knights to drop their fourth straight game. The Knights have had trouble with the Soul, losing both previous match-ups this season.
The Soul started off the game with an early ricocheted goal, but Syracuse did not back down and kept their offensive attacks coming. The Knights pressured the Soul defense the entire quarter, belting out 12 shots on goal, three times as many as Chicago. While the Knights had many opportunities, they could not finish in the first quarter. The Soul answered the Knights multiple attacks with another 2 pt. score, this time off a free kick, making the score 4-0 at the close of the first frame.
The second quarter proved to be very unusual with neither team able to tally any points. The Knights held great possession time and pounded the Soul's defensive third, creating many offensive opportunities. Syracuse was unable to finish, simply misconnecting on many high-quality attack sequences. With just 30 seconds left in the half, Knights' goalkeeper, Bryan O'Quinn, was called for an intentional trip-up resulting in a penalty kick for the Soul. O'Quinn made up for his mistake with a great pair of saves to round out the first half.
The trip-up penalty that ended the second quarter carried into the third, continuing a Soul power play. Chicago grabbed another early quarter goal off the advantage, courtesy of Matthew Stewart, increasing the deficit 6-0. Still, Syracuse dictated the rate of play for the next few minutes, as the Soul could not get much going against the Knights' defense. However, the Knights took many long shots that could not penetrate the Soul's compact defense. Syracuse entered the final period scoreless for the first time this season.
There was a lot of chippy play from both teams to start the fourth quarter; the Knights demonstrated the urgency the scoreboard called for. Jamar Beasley had a breakaway shot mid-way through the fourth quarter, but Soul goalkeeper Jeff Richey continued his perfect streak with another great save, furthering the frustration of the Syracuse offense. With only a few minutes left, Chicago counterattacked a Syracuse restart with a 2 pt score and then looped a long ball with an empty Syracuse goal, putting the final daggers in the Knights.
The Knights fall to 5-10 on the season but look to end their recent slide tomorrow night as they take on the Milwaukee Wave at 7 pm. Catch the game on mislnation.com.
