December 20, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. Tied at the top of the MISL table, the Syracuse Silver Knights (4-1) will aim to extend their eight game rivalry-winning-streak on Saturday against Thruway Rivals, the Rochester Lancers (2-4) at 7:00 p.m. EST at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
The rivalry meeting will also feature a pre-game March to the Match. Fans & Supporters will meet at the Ale 'n' Angus Pub for some pre game drinks (5pm-6:45pm) with 40 Below, Believe in Syracuse, The Silver Knight Foundation and the Salt City Supporters. The March to Match will leave at 6:45 p.m., taking a shorter and much "warmer" route to the Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
Saturday's match will be broadcast live on YouTube on the Silver Knights' official page. Syracuse's coverage will begin at 7:00 p.m. EST with commentary by Kenny Copps and Mike Kirmse. The game will be available shortly after its completion as on-demand content.
The Orange, Silver and Black enter the match tied at the top of the standings, even after dropping a 10-6 decision against the expansion side, the St. Louis Ambush. The Knights started the match slowly, trailing 5-0 after the first quarter. After closing the gap to 7-6 late in the fourth quarter, Tommy Tanner's squad pushed up with the extra attacker. Unfortunately, the Ambush's Kory Dowell stole the ball and struck with 13 seconds left to seal the game for St. Louis.
Syracuse is riding an eight game rivalry-winning streak, having won all five of its meetings against Rochester in the 2012-2013 season. The Knights swept the Lancers earlier this year in a home-and-away set on November 22nd and 23rd. Over the two games, the Salt City club outscored Rochester 41-16, including a 21-8 victory in the War Memorial's opener on the 22nd.
The Lancers are coming off of a 16-7 win against the Ambush, rallying from a 5-0 second quarter deficit. Rochester's new signing JP Rodrigues found himself on the score sheet with a fourth quarter goal from a Joey Tavernese feed. Still for the sixth straight game, 2013 MISL MVP Doug Miller was held from finding the back of the net, however the veteran forward did assist Pedrinho's third period strike.
The Knights are 9-4 in their history against the I-90 foes, having not lost to the Lancers since a 12-10 decision on January 21, 2012. Over the rivalry's last seven games, Syracuse has out-scored Rochester 151-86.
The Silver Knights may be without Neto due to injury. For the Lancers, 2013 First Team All-MISL FW Mauricio Salles will make the match after recovering from a torn meniscus, while FW Andrew Hoxie will miss the meeting due to a hamstring injury.
The Orange, Silver and Black will travel for a three game road trip against the Missouri Comets, St. Louis Ambush and Milwaukee Wave on December 28th, 29th and 31st. The Salt City club will return home against the Comets on January 10th. Single game and Season tickets are selling fast. Former Lancer Signed by Silver Knights
The Syracuse Silver Knights of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) have announced the signing of forward Rey "Boom Boom" Martinez.
Silver Knights Forward, Rey "Boom Boom" Martinez, Havana, Cuba
Martinez joins the Knights after spending two years with the team's Thruway Rivals, the Rochester Lancers. Last year, the forward tallied eight goals with 12 assists for 28 points in Rochester blue. Now with the Orange, Silver and Black, "Boom Boom" has high expectations.
"I think we have a really good team. We can win it all," Martinez said. "We have good players, a good coach and the right mix."
Originally from Havana, Cuba, Martinez defected from the country during the 2002 Gold Cup and signed with MLS side the Colorado Rapids to become the league's first Cuban player in 2004. He made seven appearances with one assist in an injury riddled year. In 2005, the forward signed with the Rochester Rhinos and began his indoor soccer career in the fall.
Along with being a former Lancer, Martinez has spent stints in the MISL with the St. Louis Steamers, Baltimore Blast, New Jersey Ironmen and Philadelphia KiXX, winning the 2008 title with the Blast. He believes all of that experience will help him out in Syracuse.
"I've been on so many teams that I really know how to play anywhere on the field," he explained. "I'm going to try and help out everybody so we can win games."
The Silver Knights expect to use Martinez all over the turf as the team looks to boast their already deep lineup.
