SYRACUSE, New York - The MASL Playoffs started rough for the Syracuse Silver Knights in Game 1 of the Eastern Division Semifinal series with the Rochester Lancers on Thursday night at the Blue Cross Arena. Powered by a trio of 2-goal performances, the Lancers took the result 20-7 and the series' lead 1-0 in this Best of 3.
Mauricio Salles, Brad Vanino and Joey Tavernese each bagged braces in the victory. Taverneses was the standout, as the forward also tallied 3 assists.
Marcos Chantel opened the scoring for the Silver Knights in the fifth minute of the match. Domenico Vitale fed his fellow defender to give the 'Cuse a 2-0 lead.
The advantage was short lived. Mauricio Salles scored a three-point blast 37 seconds later.
Rochester kept the momentum, pouring on seven more points before halftime. The Lancers took a 10-2 lead into the break.
The Thruway Rivals were up 14-2 before the Knights finally broke the run. Antonio Manfut redirected Kenardo Forbes' shot home to make it 14-4 Rochester.
The hosts finished on an 8-3 streak to take the 20-7 final.
Coach Tommy Tanner employed two goalkeepers in the loss. Bryan O'Quinn had 4 saves in the first half, with Rick Pflasterer recording 6 stops in the final frame.
The defeat drops the Salt City club to 15-9 all-time against their rivals, including a 7-6 road mark.
The Orange, Silver and Black play a decisive Game 2 on Sunday in the Oncenter War Memorial Arena. SSK need a win to force the series to Game 3, a 15-minute mini-match which would be played immediately following the conclusion of Game 2.
