Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Rochester, NY - Dallas McPherson drove in four runs, including a two-run homer to lead the Charlotte Knights past the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 8-3 in game three of a four game series at Frontier Field Wednesday night. Eight of the nine hitters in the Charlotte lineup recorded a hit on the night.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the first. Corban Joseph started the Yankee rally with an RBI double to right field, which scored Chris Dickerson for the first run of the inning. Later in the inning, Francisco Cervelli and Cole Garner drew back-to-back walks issued by Charlotte starting pitcher Scott Carroll, completing the Yankees three-run first inning.

Charlotte began its comeback in the top half of the second inning on a Jim Gallagher RBI single to right field. Tyler Kuhn then brought the Knights to within 3-2 with a solo home run to right field. Later in the fifth Drew Garcia scored from third on a Conor Jackson sacrifice fly to center completing the comeback and knotting the score at 3-3.

The Knights weren't done there as they took the lead with a three run seventh inning. With one out in the inning, Jackson roped a double to left-center and McPherson homered to centerfield off of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre reliever Chase Whitley to give the Knights the 6-3 advantage after 6 2/3 innings. Charlotte added two more runs in the top half of the eighth off of Yankee reliever Preston Claiborne. McPherson roped a two-RBI single right back up the middle completing the Knights scoring in the eighth and extending their lead to 8-3. The Knights final run of the night came on a Josh Phegley ground out to third, which scored Dan Johnson from third.

Whitley suffered the loss for the Yankees falling to 6-5 on the season. The young right-hander tossed one inning in relief of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Nelson Figueroa, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two batters. Figueroa got the no decision, allowing three runs on 10 hits over six innings. The veteran right-hander struck out one and walked one. Brandon Kloess picked up the win for the Knights in relief of Carroll.

The Yankees and Knights conclude a four game series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00. Mike O'Connor gets the spot start for the Yankees to replace the recently called up David Phelps, while Matt Zaleski gets the nod for the Knights in the series finale.
