Macon Knights News Release
MACON, Ga. â With just three days before the 2005 arenafootball2 season kicks off, the Macon Knights announced their final roster today.
The Knights made one final move yesterday to acquire international quarterback, Chris Hessel, from the Albany Conquest. The deal sent wide receiver/linebacker Manwell Talbert to the Conquest in exchange for Hessel giving the Knights a second international player on the roster. As a result of the move, the Knights placed QB Kenton Evans on re-assignment.
Rule changes by the League Office of arenafootball2 made the opportunity to pick up an international quarterback too beneficial to pass up according to head coach Mike Hold.
"By using the international player at a position that typically doesn't contribute as much, per the game plan (backup quarterback), it allows us to dress an extra roster player at a position that will contribute a lot," said Hold.
This season teams are allowed carry two international players in addition to the standard 21-man roster and teams may dress one of those international players in addition to the standard 19-man active roster.
Hold faced another difficult situation regarding four-year Macon Knights veteran André Slappey. Slappey, who is currently teaching and coaching track in Americus, Ga., was placed on team suspension to allow him to finish his teaching and coaching responsibilities, and rejoin the team once his previous commitments are complete.
"We look forward to having André back and he will be back when his commitment to his school is over," said Hold.
The Knights current roster includes 23 players (including two international) and consists of 12 veterans and 11 rookies.
Key returning players: Jamaal Garman (WR/LB), Hosea Laney (DS, WR/DB), Wesley Wilson (K).
Key newcomers and rookies: Larry Casher (DS), Lionel Hayes (QB), Matt Jackson (WR/DB), Tyrone Myers (FB/LB), Ed Wangler (OL/DL) and John Windham (OL/DL).
Don't miss the action of eight great home games as the Knights kickoff the 2005 season on Friday, April 1st against the Florida Firecats. Season ticket packages are on sale now starting at just $56 and five-game plans start at just $45.
