Memphis Xplorers News Release
Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned Eddie Strong by the af2 league office. Strong (6'4, 245lbs.) will play at the FB/LB position for the Xplorers this upcoming season.
Strong is no stranger to playing football in the Mid-South. His college football days were played less than an hour from Memphis at the University of Mississippi. In his Rebels career, Strong accumulated 300 total tackles, including 23.5 for a loss.
Strong, originally from Batesville, MS, was named to the 2002 Coaches All-SEC first team for defense. His tough defensive efforts earned him the honor of one of four team captains in 2002. Strong was a major factor in the Rebels 7-6 season that ended with a 27-23 upset over Nebraska in the Mainstay Independence Bowl.
"Having a guy like Eddie Strong will do great things for us at the FB/LB position," stated Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "Coach Allen (FB/LB Coach) is working hard with Eddie to get him ready to play the offensive side of the ball. His size is a huge advantage, not just bulk but height as well. We have understandably high expectations for him."
Xplorers General Manager Nate Yoder shared his thoughts on the local assignment for Memphis. "We are thrilled to get a guy like Eddie Strong on our team. Talking with people around town, they remember how dominant he was in college, and they are excited to come to games to see him play once again."
Strong was signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants of the NFL in May of 2003. He was later released by the team.
The Xplorers open up their 2005 season Sunday as they take on the Bossier Shreveport Battle Wings down at the Century Tel Center in Bossier. That game can be heard on the Xplorers flagship station, The Mighty 790 WMC. Memphis' home opener is scheduled for Friday April 15th at 7:30 at the DeSoto Civic Center against former division rival Arkansas. The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season.
