Knighthawks to Host Adaptive Lacrosse Camp

The Blue Cross Arena turf will become a "field of dreams" for dozens of local kids on Saturday, April 5th. The Rochester Knighthawks will host their first ever adaptive lacrosse clinic through a partnership with Rochester Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse and No Boundaries Lacrosse.

The clinic, which will be held prior to the Knighthawks game against the Minnesota Swarm, will allow kids with mental, health and physical disabilities to experience the game of lacrosse. The one-hour event will run from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and is open to all skill levels for kids in grades K-12.

"The mission of our Owner Curt Styres is to grow the game of lacrosse. Hosting No Boundaries Lacrosse is another example of his commitment to introducing the sport to kids in the Rochester community," said Knighthawks President Lewis Staats. "We are excited and honored to be one of the first organizations to host this unique event."

The clinic is free and each participant, along with two guests, will receive a ticket to the game. Additional tickets can be purchased for a discounted rate of just $10. Equipment will be available for players to borrow and try out.

"A major focus of the National Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse is to continue the growth of diversity in the sport. Commonly, diversity is defined by race, but we are looking to expand that idea to offer opportunities to everyone that is interested in playing lacrosse, including those with disabilities," said Nate Snyder, who is the President of the Rochester Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse. "Our board would like to thank the Knighthawks for donating the floor time at The Blue Cross Arena as well as the tickets to the game that evening. The Knighthawks have been a strong supporter of our chapter's mission to expand the opportunities for local individuals to play lacrosse. This is just another example of them giving back to the community."

The idea for the clinic was brought to the attention of the board of directors of the Rochester Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse by local lacrosse parent and board member Julie Boglione, who has been the driving force behind organizing this event.

No Boundaries Lacrosse was started in Shakopee, Minn. by Tami Theis and Heather Pierson with the mission of introducing lacrosse to kids who have either physical or mental disabilities. The idea was spawned from a conversation with Tami's daughter Grace, who wanted to play lacrosse like her brother and sister. The 9-year-old is a cancer survivor with Down syndrome.

Thus the concept was born of No Boundaries Lacrosse, with the mission that "no one should be limited to what they can do. Lacrosse is constantly growing in the United States and around the world, and we want to share our love for the game with you." Tami and Heather are excited to attend the event in Rochester, which is the third of its kind in the United States.
