Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Get in the middle of any conversation with lacrosse players and you will hear a lot of "I know him" or "I've played on his team." Lacrosse is a close-knit sport and often takes on a family-like atmosphere. That has never been so evident than this weekend's fundraiser for National Lacrosse League defender Jim Moss.
"When someone in your family is in need of your help, you do anything you can, and that is exactly what the lacrosse community is doing for Jim Moss," said Knighthawks goalie Pat O'Toole. Moss, 32, has played in the NLL for seven seasons (2001-07) and was the 2003 NLL Defender of the Year. Jim and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of two children. Jim and has his family are currently involved in the toughest fight of his life. Jim is battling against Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an illness that has left Jim with paralysis in his legs, and loss of sensation in his hands.
Despite never playing for the Rochester Knighthawks, Owner and General Manager Curt Styres will donate $1,000 per goal scored during the game from Arrow Express Sports on behalf of the Rochester Knighthawks to Jim Moss. The Knighthawks host the Edmonton Rush at 7:35 p.m. Jim, along with his parents Ron and Connie, will be the Knighthawks' guests at The Blue Cross Arena. After the game they will make a check presentation to Jim.
"It is hard to ask for help sometime, but an unbelievable gesture like this is very much appreciated during these hard times," said Jim, whose medical bills will range from $50,000 to $75,000. "The lacrosse community's support has been fantastic."
The process to support Moss began earlier in the season when O'Toole forwarded Owner Styres an email sent out by Jim's father, Ron, in conjunction with the Professional Lacrosse Players Association (PLPA). The request asked players and teams around the league to donate equipment, jersey, etc. to raise some money to Jim with his medical costs. After reading this email, Curt's first response was, "What more can we do to help out?" That will be very evident after the game as Styres donates a check to Jim and his family.
