The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that they have signed free agent Luc Magnan. The 24-year-old defenseman arrives in Rochester after completing his rookie season with the Toronto Rock in 2016.
"It definitely feels good," said Magnan. "I am grateful for the opportunity."
Magnan broke into the NLL after being selected in the second round (17th overall) of the 2015 NLL Entry Draft. In his inaugural season, he appeared in 11 games and notched two assists and 39 loose balls. Magnan described himself as a "stay-at-home defense," who thrives on playing a tough, physical game. His grittiness makes him a valuable addition to the Knighthawks' defense.
"He is a young, hard working, physical defender who will compete on all levels and in all aspects of our game plan," said Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen.
Prior to playing in the NLL, Magnan played collegiately at Robert Morris University. In 54 games, he collected 82 ground balls and finished his career ranked fifth all-time with 43 caused turnovers. Magnan was also named Second Team All-NEC in 2013 and was named to the All-NEC Rookie Team in 2012. Robert Morris was definitely the right fit for the native of Pine Falls, Manitoba.
"It was a great experience at Robert Morris," he said. "They get a lot from players from Canada and have produced a lot of NLL players."
The 6-foot, 225-pound defenseman spent his Junior "A" career with the Toronto Beaches and the Six Nations Arrows. In 2013, he joined the Arrows in a late season trade and helped the Arrows finish first overall. In the postseason, he appeared in 15 games as Six Nations advanced to the Ontario Finals.
On Wednesday, he will return to the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, where he played his final junior games. This time, he will be joining his new team, the Rochester Knighthawks.
"It felt good signing my deal," said Magnan. "I am excited to get going with these guys."
