Rochester Knighthawks News Release
The Rochester Knighthawks moved one step closer to clinching a berth in the National Lacrosse League Playoffs with a 15-14 win over the Calgary Roughnecks on Saturday night.
Rochester (7-7) entered the fourth quarter with a 10-9 lead, but the Roughnecks scored three unanswered goals to open the final period. The Knighthawks regained a 13-12 lead with goals from Mike Accursi, Johnny Powless and Cody Jamieson.
Trailing by one, Calgary transition player Geoff Snider tied the game at 13 with 3:55 left in regulation. Dan Dawson responded 56 seconds later and Craig Point scored the game-winner with 1:38 remaining.
With 18 seconds left, Calgary forward Curtis Dickson cut the Rochester lead to one. Snider won the final faceoff, giving the Roughnecks possession and a chance to send the game into overtime, but Calgary was unable to score the equalizer.
Dawson scored a game-high 11 points (3+8), followed by nine from Jamieson (3+6) as the Knighthawks outscored the league's highest-scoring offense in the first game of their back-to-back weekend in Alberta.
The back-and-forth game was tied on 10 different occasions. The Knighthawks gained an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but former Knighthawk Scott Evans scored twice on the power play and the teams ended the first tied at two apiece.
Calgary's Jeff Shattler and Dane Dobbie each netted a pair in the second quarter and the Roughnecks entered the half up by one. Shattler scored back-to-back goals at 4:44 and 5:29 to give Calgary a 4-3 lead, their first of the game. Evans and Dobbie scored 33 seconds apart to gain a 7-5 lead. Jamieson netted the final goal of the first half to trim the deficit to one.
Goaltender Matt Vinc held the Roughnecks to only two third-quarter goals, allowing Rochester to earn a 10-9 advantage heading into the fourth. Dawson scored the first and last goals of the quarter, the first 42 seconds into the period and the latter with only 12 seconds remaining.
Calgary's offense was led by Evans (3+7), Dickson (2+5) and Shattler (4+2). Goaltender Mike Poulin made 33 saves on 48 shots. Snider won 79 percent of his faceoff attempts, winning 26 of draws and collecting a game-high 15 loose balls.
With six points, Vitarelli (3+3) earned his 100th career point. Accursi surpassed Calgary Head Coach Curt Malawsky for seventh all-time on Rochester's goal-scoring list with two against the Roughnecks. Vinc is now second in franchise history in saves (1,761) after making 44 on 58 shots.
The Knighthawks return to action on Sunday, April 14th at 4:00 p.m. with a rematch against the Edmonton Rush. With a win in Edmonton, Rochester would secure the second seed in the East Division and a home playoff game in the first round. The game can be seen live on YouTube via The Lacrosse Network.
