Klingberg Sinks Pirates with Overtime Winner
January 14, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Carl Klingberg found some room between the goaltender's pad and the post just over two minutes into overtime and squeezed the puck through to give the St. John's IceCaps a thrilling 2-1 win over the Portland Pirates at Mile One Centre on Wednesday night.
IceCaps goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped all but one of the 33 shots he faced to help his team snap a two-game winless skid.
The teams skated to a scoreless opening frame in which the IceCaps held the edge in shots 12-10.
St. John's was the first to find the back of the net in the second period as Scott Kosmachuk located the puck in traffic in front of Portland goaltender Mike McKenna and was able to sneak the puck through the five-hole and just over the goal line on the power play at 9:50 for his seventh goal of the year.
Brendan Shinnimin evened the score later in the frame as he capitalized on a Hellebuyck rebound generated by a strong shot from Pirates' centre Justin Hodgman at 16:12.
The teams weren't able to find a winner in the third period as both Hellebuyck and McKenna stood tall, stopping everything fired their way.
Klingberg ended the game 2:11 into overtime as he took a pass from Julian Melchiori in the corner to the right of McKenna and slid the puck along the goal line. It found some room and got by the goaltender, giving the IceCaps the victory.
The IceCaps and Pirates have two games left in this current three-game series, with the next game scheduled for Friday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Mile One Centre Box Office, by phone at (709) 576-7657 and online at www.mileoncecentre.com.
