Cincinnati Kings News Release

CINCINNATI (May 5) -- After starting the season with two weekend road trips, the Cincinnati Kings opened their 2006 home schedule Friday night with a 1-0 win over the Western Mass Pioneers in United Soccer Leagues Second Division action at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.

The lone goal was scored in the 46th minute by Jeff Hughes, with the assist from Jack Cummings. Hughes now has a two game 'hat trick,' scoring two goals in the Kings' win last weekend against Harrisburg to go with tonight's score.

"Without Jeff, we wouldn't have won these last two games," said Head Coach Jon Pickup. "He's come through for us just when we needed the offense."

The Kings had 21 shots on goal in the game to the Pioneers' 8. Kings goalie Jordan James was credited with four saves in goal, to the Pioneers' 11.

"We had 20 minutes in the first half that we really played strong," said Pickup. "We're a better team this year than last, so we can overcome stretches where we aren't as sharp."

The Kings are now 3-1-0 and remain at the top of the Second Division. The Pioneers are now 1-1-1.

The Kings stay at home for a match at 7 p.m. next Saturday, May 13, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. The game is designated "Pink Socks Night," with the team wearing pink knee socks in honor of breast cancer survivors. Mothers attending the game also will receive complimentary flowers.
