USL United Soccer League Championship

Battery welcomes Romario and Miami FC Sunday at Blackbaud

May 5, 2006 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery hosts Miami FC this Sunday at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 5 PM with kick off set for 6 PM. Miami's roster includes two Brazilian World Cup winners, Romario and Zinho. Both players are expected to appear at Blackbaud on Sunday.

The Charleston Battery (1-0, 3 points) opened its 2006 season last Saturday night with a convincing 3-0 win versus the Virginia Beach Mariners. Forward Gavin Glinton scored twice on his debut with Charleston, the third goal was an own-goal scored by Mariners defender Chris Schwarze. The 3-0 win was the Battery's first by that score-line in USL competition since the 2003 Championship win against the Minnesota Thunder.

Glinton was named USL First Division player of the week following the Battery win, midfielder Omar Daley and defender Brandon Curran both joined Glinton on the USL First Division team of the week.

Miami FC is an expansion franchise; they opened their season two weeks ago with a solid 0-0 tie versus the powerhouse Montreal Impact. Three players were unavailable for that game, Romario, former MLS stand-out Diego Walsh and Haitian international Stephane Guillaume; all three are available for selection on Sunday.

During his 21-year career, Romario has played for several of the top clubs in the world including Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Fluminense, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Valencia. Boasting a total of 959 career goals, Romario is rapidly approaching the magical number of 1,000, a feat which only "The King" Pelé has previously achieved.
