King's Cup Renews this Weekend
May 12, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Saint Louis FC News Release
Saint Louis FC and Louisville City FC both began playing in the USL last season. The two clubs quickly developed a rivalry on the field and even quicker off it when the supporters group of each created the King's Cup.
The King's Cup is awarded to the supporters group of the club that wins the regular season series between Saint Louis FC and Louisville City FC. The winning club is determined by points with goal differential serving as the first tie breaker. If the teams are still tied at this point, away goals will be the next determining factor. In the event there is still a tie, the winner from the previous year will retain the cup.
As Eastern Conference opponents last year, Louisville City FC supporters won the cup by goal differential after each side earned a win and a draw at its respective home. Taking a 2-0 loss and a draw on the road, Saint Louis FC managed a draw at home and needed a big effort on the final game of the season to win the cup in its inaugural season. STLFC came into the match with a two-game home winning streak and earned a 2-1 victory to close out the season on an uptick, but fell short of winning the cup.
In 2016, Saint Louis FC moved to the Western Conference and will only play Louisville twice this year. With Louisville in first place of the Eastern Conference and Saint Louis in fourth in the Western Conference at the time of this writing, the 2016 edition of the King's Cup appears to have all the intrigue and anticipation a rivalry deserves.
"I know there's a lot of bragging rights involved in this series, so there's definitely more meaning behind it." said Parker Maher when discussing the first leg of the King's Cup. Irvin Herrera, new to the rivalry this year already understands the importance of the contest saying, "Every game is very important for us but the King's Cup makes it even more important, not only for us but for our fans."
The second leg of the King's Cup will be played at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on Saturday, September 17 to close out the regular season home schedule for Saint Louis FC.
