United to Travel to Tucson for Second Round of U.S. Open Cup

PEORIA - Arizona United Soccer Club will head to Tucson for its second round U.S. Open Cup match following a 3-0 FC Tucson win over San Nicolas FC. This will be the second meeting between the two clubs. Arizona United SC won their first-ever meeting, 3-1, during a preseason friendly at the Desert Diamond Cup on February 24.

San Nicolas FC struggled to keep up with FC Tucson's fast-paced offensive attack as Tucson forward Dominic Papa scored off a cross from Minh Vu in the sixth minute.

In the 32nd minute, FC Tucson had the chance to double their lead after earning a penalty kick for a handball by a San Nicolas defender. Vu converted the penalty in the lower left corner to extend Tucson's lead to 2-0.

Momentum seemed to shift early in the second half as San Nicolas came out with intensity and earned opportunities on goal. But, in the 57th minute, Tucson's Vu scored his second goal of the match off an outside-the-foot cross from Jon Bakero to put FC Tucson up, 3-0.

Arizona United SC is 2-2-0 in U.S. Open Cup play. Last season the club lost its opening match against Chula Vista FC. In 2014, Arizona United defeated PDL side Portland Timbers U-23s and USL side OKC Energy FC before losing to MLS side LA Galaxy in the fourth round.

Arizona United SC's third U.S. Open Cup campaign begins on Wednesday, May 18, at Kino North Stadium in Tucson, Arizona. The match will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the match are not available yet, but fans can visit ArizonaUnited.com for details.
