Kingfish knock off IceGators, 5-4 in OT

Marquis Mathieu tallied two goals and Niklas Sundberg made 42 saves as the Kingfish knocked off the Louisiana IceGators in overtime, 5-4.

The Kingfish used a 5-on-3 power play and a five minute major penalty to jump out to an early 1-0 lead on the IceGators. Marquis Mathieu beat Kyle Kettles from the high slot at the 2:29 mark of the first period of play on the man advantage. Trevor Demmans and Bryan Richardson added the assists on the goal.

Jerry Gernander gave the Kingfish a two goal lead on the remaining time on the major penalty. Gernander found the loose puck along the goal line and stuffed it past Kettles and a pile up in front of the IceGator net. Jason Norrie and Bryan Richardson added the assists on the power play goal at the 3:28 mark of the period.

Louisiana cut the lead back to one goal as Shawn Skeihar deflected a Cal Benazic shot past Niklas Sundberg on the power play. Kenny Corupe also added an assist on the goal at the 11:33 mark of the period.

Shawn McNeil tied the game up on a slap-shot from the top of the right face-off circle on the power play. Nathan Rempel and Benazic added the assists on the goal at the 6:31 mark of the second.

Rod Sarich gave the IceGators a 3-2 lead at the 9:48 mark of the second on Louisiana's third power play goal of the evening. Chris Taliercio and Kenny Corupe added the assists on the goal.

Dwayne Blais tied the game at three with his first goal as a Kingfish as he pushed a loose puck under Kettles at the 12:41 mark of the second period. Mathieu and Tom Kaiman added the assists on the goal.

The IceGators regained the lead as Bobby Brown got credit for a goal that bounced off the back dasher board and into the air, off of Sundberg's back and into the net for the score. Sarich and Taliercio added the assists on the goal.

Marquis Mathieu tied the game up at four with his second goal of the game on a breakaway 34 seconds later. Sam Paquet picked up an assist as he fed Mathieu on the breakaway.

Jason Norrie tallied the game winning goal at the 2:48 mark of the overtime session as he deflected a centering pass from Mike Kiesman past Kettles for the goal.

The Kingfish broke their drought on the power play as they went 2-5 on the man advantage.
