Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday announced that left wing Derek King and defenseman Patrick Boileau have been assigned to the American Hockey League team by the Detroit Red Wings. In addition, the Griffins have assigned four players to either East Coast or United Hockey League teams, including forwards Matt Ellis and Tim Verbeek (ECHL Toledo), center Dustin Whitecotton (UHL Missouri) and defenseman Philippe Plante (UHL Muskegon).

King, 35, begins his 16th professional season and third with Grand Rapids. He helped lead the Griffins to the International Hockey League's Turner Cup finals in 1999-00, and his 83 points (32-51-83) in 76 games the following season tied for the IHL scoring title. King, who will serve as a player/assistant coach for Grand Rapids, notched 45 points (19-26-45) in 60 games for Munich, Germany, last season and has appeared in 830 NHL contests, totaling 612 points (261-351-612).

Boileau, 27, comes to the Griffins after spending the last seven AHL seasons in Portland. He ranks as the Pirates' fourth-leading scorer all-time and their top scoring defenseman with 206 points (63-143-206) in 459 contests, and has one assist in seven career NHL games with the Washington Capitals. Last season, Boileau set a personal high with 17 goals and added 19 assists in 75 outings with Portland, while going scoreless in two appearances with Washington.

Twenty five players remain on the Griffins' training camp roster, including 15 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders. After going 0-2 on the preseason, Grand Rapids will open its second AHL season this Saturday, Oct. 12, when the Cleveland Barons visit Van Andel Arena at 7:30 p.m.
