Indianapolis Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice opens up its 2002 training camp on Monday morning as the team will take the ice at 11:30 a.m. from the Pepsi Coliseum.
"The players and myself are excited to get on the ice," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. "It's my first chance to see some of these players in practice and in game situations. I expect these ten days to be intense as jobs are out there to be won."
"Camp McRae" gets underway on Monday with 25 players on the initial roster, including six players who spent time on last year's squad. All-star defenseman Bernie John, who is the top-scoring defenseman in the CHL since the start of the 1999-00 season, and goaltender Jamie Morris are the lone holdovers from the team's 2000 Miron Cup Championship Team. The other four returnees from last season are defensemen Ryan Aikia and Kevin Popp and forwards Justin Kearns and Don Malko.
Prominent newcomers include the high-scoring forward trio of Kevin St. Jacques, Randy Holmes and Andrew Taylor. St. Jacques, who has amassed 736 points in just 613 career games, returns to the city where he began his pro career back in 1992 with the IHL's Ice. Holmes arrives from Kalamazoo, MI where he led the K-Wings (UHL) in scoring the past two seasons, while Taylor brings his well-rounded game from the ECHL. Other key additions include forwards Greg Olsen and Corey Waring and goaltender Shawn Silver.
The Indianapolis Ice opens up its 15th season of hockey in the "Circle City" with a pair of weekend home games as the team hosts the Tulsa Oilers on Friday, October 18th and the Memphis RiverKings on Saturday, October 19th. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. from the Pepsi Coliseum.
Fans can purchase tickets for individual games at all Ticketmaster locations including select Marsh Supermarkets, Karma Records, select L.S. Ayers and the Pepsi Coliseum and Conseco Fieldhouse box offices, or by calling 239-5151 or online at ticketmaster.com
